Are you over 18? (you must be 18+ to apply) Ah, to be younger than 18 again... wait, that would probably suck. But I wouldn't have to listen to 80's music this time. Hmmm.

Which game(s) are you joining us in? STO

What is the character or account name you’re joining that game with? I believe it is Mavis@Korsus2

Do you have friends or family in the guild? If so what is their forum name? Two friends from my regular mmo group have applied (reynorpadilla and The Inquisitor.) I also just met Raincrow last night. He helped us blow stuff up and show me that I suck at healing in STO so far with his many deaths.

What follows are a bunch of questions that give us a sense of your personality, and give us something to talk about. If your answers are boring or short, we’ll assume you’re boring (and probably short). But what if the questions are boring or short? Can this be a chicken or egg conundrum? Ohh, "conundrum" was a great episode in TNG. Wait... internal geek-o-meter says it's not okay to talk about such things with real people. Hmm, I suppose if I'm joining a gamer guild and not trying to woo a lady, it might be okay this once. Um, what was the question again?

1. Tell us the story of one of the dumbest, funniest or most embarrassing things you've done as an adult. Ah dumb me, funny me or embarrassed me? Well, I'll choose embarrassed me and pick a story that links to more info for you all: I have played disc golf for many years now (having been introduced to it by a friend who might be following with an application.) My friend taught me to play on a college campus where the "holes" were statues, doorways, etc. Well, since it was a college campus, you can imagine that there might be lots of people walking around. I can't count how many times I said to myself, "I couldn't possibly hit that person" before chucking my disc wildly at their head. And the broken window incident... and the countless lost discs because I couldn't climb onto THAT rooftop in the middle of the night to retrieve said disc...

2. What's the coolest job you've ever had? What's the worst? (And why?) Being a casino dealer was fun in the early days ('98.) It was all new. And it was cool to give people money. But the negativity of the industry kind of wore me down. I left it to work for Games Workshop, eventually becoming the manager of the Tacoma shop where I met The Inquisitor and taught him how to paint. (Checking to see if he reads this. Are you there Dr Color Wheel?) Alas, Games Workshop tried to use me as imperial guard fodder instead of the Space Marine Librarian that I am. (Okay, I don't really like the Space Marines that much.) Anyway, I went back to the casino industry and am now managing the gaming part of a casino/card room in WA.

3. Name three video games you'll replay no matter how old they get. (And why?) Master of Orion 2 because it was the best game ever. Civ whatever because it is basically Master of Orion not in space. And I would love to once again run around in North Ro frantically trying to evade the non-aggressive giant scarabs because I don't know that they won't attack me.

4. Tell us about the most annoying person you've ever met, and why he/she annoyed you. I used to get really annoyed when jerks would win at my blackjack table. I would call on Gamblor to smite them, to no avail. (Oh Gamblor!!) But then one day I realized there might be more going on: For hours this grumpy old man was winning from me, occasionally giving his 30-something daughter a few chips to play with (which I would promptly take. D'oh!) So after a few hours of me begging Gamblor to put the smack down on this guy, he turns to his daughter, gives her $300 and says, "now go and buy my granddaughter that swing-set she wants." Okay, I felt like a jerk. I even thought I heard a non corporeal voice say, "whatever... I do what I want!" (Okay, mixing metaphors with The Simpsons and South Park might be like crossing the streams in Ghostbusters.)

5. Tell us something cool about yourself that has nothing to do with gaming. (Free hint: photo or video supporting evidence is a plus. :D ) I like to read. And if you don't think that's cool, I ask... what are you doing at this exact moment. Har. These past few years I've been reading books on quantum physics or biographies of physicists themselves. The early days of quantum physics (1880's-1940's?) has some fascinating stuff. But my all time favorite book is "The Illuminatus Trilogy" by Robert Anton Wilson. He's by far my favorite author.

Wow, I thought I needed to proofread this for spelling, not content. That's a pretty big typo; I meant to say, "The Schrodinger's Cat Trilogy" by Robert Anton Wilson.

6. Why choose the Unrepentant Gaming Community over just a regular gaming guild? My friends and I are looking for some continuity with a bigger community as we move between mmo's. Reynorpadilla found you and was interested first. This line from your charter says it very well: "Central to Unrepentant is our sense of community. We believe the games you play aren’t as important as the people you play them with, and to that end we strive only to admit the kind of members you’d want to hang out and have a drink with." So far, I've enjoyed what I would call your "irreverent respect." Wait, is that a conundrum? Oh, "Conundrum" was a great TNG episode...

BONUS: Ask us some questions! We're sure you've got some. Well, I would ask questions but that would ruin the perfect bookend I had going for my app with the "Conundrum" reference.

I actually don't have any specific questions right now, though I'm sure I'll have some as the process continues. And it is a process for all of us (nothing wrong with that.)

Re: Guild Application (current game STO)

Conundrum...

So, many years ago, I did some drugs (not marijuana or booze, but the details aren't important). At one point, I left the room where we were all hanging out to do something. I don't remember what. When I came back, some people had left, and there were two new people there. I had no idea who they were. Their sudden appearance kinda freaked me out a bit. The only thing I could think of was that episode of TNG where everyone on the ship lost their memories and that new officer guy was there but since nobody knew anything only the audience knew he was out of place. I kept thinking on that, and I kept getting more and more freaked the fuck out by their presence.

Funny thing is, whenever I see that episode now (which is titled Conundrum, in case anyone forgot that), it conjures up memories of that experience. Only I get this weird state of being memory where I actually feel like I'm on said drugs again while being weirded out by the new people, so basically that episode freaks me the hell out now.

Anyway...

Working for a casino gets you instant cool points. I'm sure you deal with a lot of asshattery, but its still a cool job.

Good Christ, whenever someone even mentions those books it melts my brain a little more.

That's a good way of putting it, even if it is a conundrum.

You failed to heal Raincrow? This does not a bad healer make. It just means Raincrow is a magnet for stray phaser fire, and amorous looking drones that want to 'get a little closer'.

I'm sure you're perfectly capable with a hypospray. You can use them on me if you like? I die lots too :)

Ok, don't use Raincrow as any sort of standard for gaming acumen. :2finger:
He's probably a fine standard for the typical U though. :2thumbsup:

Another mention of MOO II

Can you get me comps and or a room rate?

Don't bag on the 80's, I like my self delusions.

Raincrow is a badass and doesn't match levels... so to be fair, he was like ten effective levels lower than the group.

Valthas is still a slow healer. :p

Well, you're his buddy. If you say he sucks, then The U will respect that.

Valthas, you suck.

Re: Guild Application (current game STO)

Trying to heal Raincrow is an exercise in futility. I think he one-shots himself sometimes. I don't really know how since the mechanics don't allow for that, but it happens.

So Val, what do you like most about STO so far? Least?

Good Day Val!

Great app so far. I'm kind of curious about your band of friends. You work at a casino, Inquisitor is a Dr., Rey is a single father/hairstylist. I can't wait to see what other profession is in your group.

So which would be your favorite ST series and/or movie?

Re: Guild Application (current game STO)

Haha, yeah, I didn't feel so bad once I realized Raincrow was intentionally not matching levels. And when the hell did I become a mmo healer first and foremost? I'm old school CC! Lock down the entire room in Everquest. And almost the whole room in City of Heroes... that is until they die so fast you can't even cc anything. Ha. But that game was pretty over the top with it's crowd control. I remember soloing instances where I would surgically cc everything while stabbing them with mind probes. (Um, opening myself to a joke here...) It was slow and boring, of course. Much more fun to play with others... which brings me back to this application.

(By the way, "suck" is a relative term. I suck big time when compared with the most awesomest healer ever. But where do I fall in the range between that and lamest healer ever? Well, I'm sure I'm above the category of "glad we have some heals at least.") :)

Actually, I find that playing many types of classes makes me better at all of them; I begin to understand the mechanics of them all and how the synergize with each other. But understanding is one thing; execution while eating lasagna and drinking dark beer is another.

Regarding the STO game: so far, I enjoy the depth of the universe the most. The game engine is kind of clunky but passable, I guess (when balanced with the story.) Space combat is okay, though I've historically never been a fan; it is growing on me. I mean, who wouldn't want to fly a fricking Enterprise-style cruiser? (Well, me apparently since I'm doing science vessels. But man, the cruiser looks awesome.) My favorite line so far was when a Ferengi npc said, "I'm looking for a leggy Vulcan female with a loose attitude toward inter-species copulation" or something to that effect. Did I mention that my toon is a sexy-stanced Vulcan female? Well, the quest did not give me the option to rub his ears.

Oh... what I like least about the game? I'm very disappointed in species 8472 being shape shifters. I don't remember that from the Voyager story arc. Why do that? We just went through that kind of story with the Founders. More/different shapeshifters? Why? I don't know, maybe I missed that element in the Voyager arc. I never liked Voyager much... which brings me to:

Favorite ST series is TNG/DS9. TNG had some stories/acting that was just excellent, though as a series I might call it more "hit and miss." DS9 started slowly but as soon as they introduced The Dominion, it really got good. I'd say season 5 and 6 of DS9 are my favorites of the ST body of work, even if TNG gets my sentimental vote. Ronald D. Moore is awesome (as evidenced by BSG.)

I did enjoy the recent Trek movie. I liked how they tipped their hat to the lore of the old series but kept a fresh spin on things. (The villain was pretty weak but it is hard to make the villain as interesting as the heroes. The best books/movies do it, though.) I'm looking forward to what they do next, at least.

Sounds like you heal better than me.

Doesn't take much.

There are some clunky aspects of STO, I agree, but I think you eventually learn to play around them.

Howdy Valthas, your app seems to be going well. So tell me, is a drink and a push really a win?

If you even get a drink, I still didn't get an answer about comps or room rates.

You don't want to know about his room rates... they are cheap moneywise... but you have to pay extra in certain ways.

Mr. Color Wheel, eh?

I will vouch for Valthas; salt of the earth, great guy! And, coincidentally, the person with whom I had one of my first MMO experiences (WAR)

BTW- Those are his tables you see those minis on. Ok, he might not show you: here's the table he built (and pissed off his underlings by leaving a huge mess in the middle of the store...). Still have pics of them in my PB acct...

And we worked on other stuff like a tryanid table...

fun times, fun times... airbrushing tables to Tool was pretty fun. :2thumbsup:

We're missing a really important question. Valthas, what is sexier?

A. Super hot Vulcan chick

B. Super hot Orion chick

C. Super hot Chiss chick

Whatever your answer, remember:
