Are you over 18? (You must be 18+ to apply.)
Yes

What are some games you plan on playing with us?
STO (all I'm actively playing for now)

What is the character or account name you’re joining that game with?
@VodoooMike (yes, spelled like that.. one typo and you're stuck forever)

Do you have friends or family in the Unrepentant community? If so what is their forum name?
I sure don't

So... let's talk! What follows are a bunch of questions that give us a sense of your personality, and give us something to talk about. If your answers are boring or short, we’ll assume you’re boring (and probably short).

Tell us the story of one of the dumbest, funniest or most embarrassing things you've done as an adult.
I'm pretty sure becoming an adult is the dumbest thing I've ever done. Adulthood is high-octane bullshit. I guess I also punched the wall when I was really angry only to discover it was concrete blocks with a 1mm thick layer of plaster over it.

You haven't lived until you've seen multiple medical professionals look at your x-ray and make horrified faces in that little booth between taking the pictures.

What's the coolest job you've ever had? What's the worst? (And why?)
I work for the coolest, smartest, most handsome boss in the world (you know who I'm talking about). I ran an internet chat system for about a decade which was probably one of the coolest "jobs" (I put it in quotes because it took like ... four hours a month to accomplish) I've done.

Worst job was probably scooping ice cream when I was 19. Both my buddy and I managed to sprain our wrists scooping the most popular flavour (hazelnut. . . with whole hazelnuts in it) all damned summer long. You know who has sympathy for icecream-related injuries? Nobody. You can't tell women you hurt yourself on icecream. At best you'll be getting pity sex... but probably not that... and it's not like you've got your hazelnut-ravaged hand at that point, right?

Name three video games you'll replay no matter how old they get. (And why?)
City of Heroes.. because it was the best MMO ever owing to the fact that it didn't spend its time trying to balance anything - it was just about letting players have fun with their pals setting people on fire and such.

Planescape:Torment .. probably the best RPG game ever made. Great characters, great dialogue, multiple solutions to every problem, the ability to use your own severed leg as a weapon. It had it all.

ACS (Adventure Construction Set).. once upon a time EA made interesting and fun games. I actually had to buy a second copy of this game because the floppy disk wore out. Yeah, floppy disk... you got to make your own RPG games, or could let it create one randomly for you. Randomly created RPG games are impressively bad.. and also hilarious.

Tell us about the most annoying person you've ever met, and why he/she annoyed you.
Hell, I can't narrow that one down. Anyone who takes themselves seriously and who takes disingenuous offense over... whatever random topic they've decided is sacrosanct today. Anyone who imagines themselves to be an "activist" for some random cause they're doing nothing about but acting ass-hurt that you're not on board with it.

Also, I have a cousin who has a homeopathic business. When he and his wife were trying to get pregnant I suggested they try diluting his semen with copious amounts of water to improve their chances. They didn't think that was funny but it clearly was comedy gold.

Tell us something cool about yourself that has nothing to do with gaming. (Free hint: responding to your application thread with photo or video supporting evidence is a plus!)
I have three university degrees in completely unrelated subjects. I don't mention any of them on CVs/resumes on the super-rare occasion I bother to make one, and I never bring any of them up in job interviews (though I'll admit to one of them if they ask. .. whatever I think is least relevant). I've never worked a job where having a degree made a shred of difference except for occasional trivia. I have no interest in working for anyone who thinks they're of key importance.

Why choose the Unrepentant Gaming Community over just a regular gaming guild?
90% of gaming guilds claim to be casual and laid back, but 99% of those are ridiculous dictatorships run by people who forget they're in a video game not the bloody military (I mean, maybe they're in the military too, but I'm not, and I don't have to salute some internet rando because he's higher ranked in the land of red-trolley make-believe).

I want to chill out, play some games, maybe hang out with people who aren't looking for an excuse to be judgmental and offended. I mean, they can BE judgmental and get offended all they want, but lets pretend we're adults and can handle having different opinions, mindsets, and senses of humour and not make such a fucking issue about it. If humans were that uptight naturally we'd have never made it out of the caves without bashing each other's heads in with rocks.

The intro text for Unrepentant suggested this might be a good fit for that.

BONUS: Ask us some questions! We're sure you've got some.
Can you figure out the super-secret message that is in this application? (Hint: it has to do with the placement and number of periods.. but not in this part).

If not, you're buying.

Almost done!

You enter a cave before starting an adventure. A wise old man tells you "It's dangerous to go alone. Take this." What does he hand you and why?
It's a tub of vaseline because he's creepy and possessed of unfathomable self-esteem. I won't be accepting any sort of sword from you today, old man.

Firstly apologies it has taken this long for any of us to come back to you...we are that casual! Seriously we aren't casual about our membership and ensuring we get drama free gaming pals as a result - it just seems all the other folk are away..? Once accepted though, we are that casual, no attendance requirements etc etc play when you want and whatever we have a group doing, or suggest something new.

Odd.

No, didnt notice any code, is it morse perhaps? I just thought your ellipsis were random.

Ice cream...yum. Do you like traditional flavours or something more avant garde? I have to say I am a convert to salted caramel.

If you are still around and interested, reply to this post and I can tell you how the process should work.

No worries. I practice a philosophy of unconditionally positive self-regard which is made easier by contextualizing all things in terms of self-awesomeness. Thus, I simply assumed people had been rendered speechless by how cool I am. When I say things like that people often (vigorously) dispute the idea, but I then contextualize that as them being sour-grapes envious of that coolness. It's like a circular, self-referential shield against cognitive dissonance! I'm pretty sure the current president of the USA practices the same martial art.

It was, indeed, random... so I suppose the secret message was "don't spend too much time on anything with a buzzfeed-style description". Another fun one is to point out that if you exhale all the way and hold your breath you can still puff up your cheeks an unlimited number of times without inhaling. How does that work? Then you can sit back and enjoy the mental image of people sitting at their computers, oxygen-starved, puffing up their cheeks trying to solve the mysterious of puffer gas. Works especially well in chat rooms.

Since we were allowed to scoop ourselves ice cream during our breaks, I so over-ate the stuff during my time at that job that I didn't eat ice cream again for maybe 3 years. Before that happened, though, I took a boring-sounding liking to Vanilla which, it turned out, was the most expensive flavour to make. Actual vanilla (as opposed to the fake stuff that most people use) is pretty expensive, but the taste was phenomenal. Nowadays its Pralines 'n Cream from Baskin' Robins or Strawberry Hagen Daas.

I'm certainly game.

Hi, it seems this thread is in need of some attention.
Unfortunately we don't get a lot of applications for STO, so some of us might have fallen into a bad habbit of ignoring this subforum?

Hopefully one of our leader will be along shortly for the official welcome and all that. in the meantime, you might want to join our in-game chat channel "Sexytime" and introduce yourself, make sure people know about this application and all that jazz.

No worries. Besides, the point of these applications isn't really to ascertain someone's game-specific knowledge or ability as much as it is to see how they handle a conversational gang-bang, right? So far the unrepentants have taken it pretty easy on me, and in game terms I've been playing long enough that I'm not desperate for access to fleet holdings or anything.

Oh I did that before I even posted to this forum... well, the channel joining part, not the introduction part. For my own entertainment I tend to join cryptic's global channels and just act like I've been there the whole time to see if anyone stops and asks me who the hell I am or if they wonder if they just hadn't been paying attention and don't want to seem out of the loop. There hasn't been a lot of activity on the channel during the hours I'm on, but when there is I tend to just jump into conversations and such.

Cryptic cutting the links between the chat systems on their games will make that considerably less entertaining, of course, since the only channels I'll be able to join will be STO related, and I actually know what I'm talking about with that game unlike the conversations I join about neverwinter. I will no longer be able to insist that the tank should use Emergency Power to Shields if he's having trouble surviving boss hits until someone kicks me out of the channel (or at least not without actually logging into neverwinter, and that'd defeat the purpose).

For the time being I'll just keep chatting there when there's chatting to be done, and offering help to anyone who asks for it. What happens happens, and at its own pace.

No, I havent seen anyone looking for people for actual play, and not a lot of in-channel activity as of late, though that may just be a matter of odd scheduling - I've been on at odd hours due to wonky real-life requirements related to the whole covid-19 lockdown (this isn't one of those party towns where they're letting chips fall where they may and all that).

It may be a coincidence and all, but I've found that elective play dips a bit when the latest content event is ground based... like people feel a bit drained after their daily dose of ground-iness. I don't blame them, really - probably 80% of players build around space content and probably 90% of those only do ground stuff when it's absolutely required. The current event is a patrol that is long enough to qualify as an episode, and it's against the borg, so people get all the fun of ground content coupled with the extra pleasure of clicking their frequency remodulators every 10 seconds. I'm sure there are plenty of folks who can't put together a physical damage based ground build who have to slog through that, and finish each day wanting to punch a baby.

I'm content to watch for activity in the channel when I'm on and check back here every day or two. Thanks for your vote, btw!

You mentioned in your app that STO was all you're playing for now; does that include single player or casual multiplayer/co-op games, or are there other games of interest you're spending time on?

You're correct in assuming I meant MMOs... STO is the only one I log into every day at the moment but is not the only game I play regularly. In terms of casual multiplayer I take part in a weekly gaming group of six people who get together (virtually) every wednesday night for two hours to play sometime, currently that something is "Citadel: Forged with Fire" which is an ARK-like crafting/survival game. In terms of single-player games I've been playing We Happy Few, Last Epoch, and trying out No Man's Sky.

I've mostly been restricting myself to STO to avoid procrastinating on my work on City of Heroes, since I'm relatively eager for the latest version to hit a stable-enough point that I can finally get my private server set up to the point that I can start expanding its playerbase beyond my well-established gaming group (meaning people I know won't mess around and break things on purpose). Once that project is nicely settled I'll probably pick up some of the other MMO and MMO-lite games that I was playing in the past.

I suppose today is Fallout 76's expansion release day, so I'll probably spend a good chunk of time on that game for the next little while too.

The application thread isnt getting the love it deserves from us in my opinion so good to see you have been bearing with us/keeping up with your app.

I would normally like to see some in-game reportign from members when the applicant doesnt play the same games as me but like tallon i think i hhave enough here to support the app with my vote.

YES for all-round chillness and gaming savvy

I'll echo Arkle's sentiment about bearing with us. This is a good app. Do you have our discord and mumble information? Maybe you could catch up to some members there to chat a bit? For casual conversation, Mumble might be the better bet. I usually like to see either in game member feedback or voice comm feedback before I vote. I am liking this app alot though.

Thanks for the vote! I see that you're a DDO-focused member, and that's almost certainly the game I'll get back to once I have more free time. My own weekly gaming group didn't love DDO as much as I did so I wasn't able to get the full experience there (I'm a 3e/3.5e/path fiend, so.. it came more naturally to me than it did to our non-tabletoppers). How is the UNR presence in DDO? Mostly endgame stuff or is there a level spread? I seem to recall DDO was a bit punitive when it came to grouping with high level disparities, but that was just at first glance.

Eek, voice chat... I tend to stay away from that in terms of casual chit-chat, though its good for organized gaming runs. The reasons being two-fold... one, I like to listen to music while I do casual gaming, which doesn't mix well with VC... and two, people say I sound serious and angry on VC and I'm generally neither. Oh, I guess there's a third - people talk over each other which is super annoying... and doesn't happen in text.

Funny story about that. Years ago I ran a chat room system, and one of the features people most requested was voice chat. Since I have an aversion to the talking-over-each-other thing, I thought I'd try sequenced voice chat instead of realtime(ish... there's always some latency) voice chat. What that means is that when you held down your talk key it recorded, and when you let go, it sent what it recorded as a chunk of data. Each person in the room received those chunks in the order they were sent, and played them back, one at a time, in that order.

Now, you may be thinking "that's not real voice chat" or "I don't like that idea" and I knew that's what everyone would say... but the thing is, nobody noticed that it was how things were done until they were TOLD that's how it was done. Until then they just assumed it was all realtime and that people were just not getting into talk-collisions like usual (nobody notices when there's a lack of problems, generally). Really, people would use it for days or weeks without realizing... because what they really cared about was hearing people talk, and having people hear them talk.

Anyway, enough of that tangent. I'll try to hook up with some people in-game on STO, so maybe we can go that route ;)

Actually I'm of the same mind with voice chat. While I don't participate in all things voice that the UEY does, I would present our mumble server as gaming-based. Small groups prevent the over-talk, and other than side-bars and greatings each channel is game-based. We can also make additional side rooms if the game (or sidebars) are hot.

Can you PM me the mumble password? I did set up the mumble app (and since it lets you self-host servers I'm tempted to try running it for my own group) but I wasn't able to find the PW beyond "ask a member to tell you".

I'll give the mumble text-chat aspect a go, and try to get some gaming time in during the hours that things seem to happen on STO with the fleet based on the logs.

I'll reconfigure the isolinear chips and dis-attenuate the phase discrepancy modulators to beam this one to the Accepted pile.

Voodoo - be sure to sign the STO roll call here in the forums and review the Contributor policy and affirm that you won't be a jerk in that thread (assuming you want to contribute to the fleet base).

Other than that, join the chat channel Sexytime (the command is: /channel_join Sexytime) ingame so you can chat with us STOers. We have both Fed and KDF fleets so we use that over Fleet Chat so we can all annoy each other regardless of what faction you're on.
